I believe that a lot of the choices we make in our life have to do with our social environments. I can think of many times where I did something because it was expected of society. One of the biggest decisions in my life that was influenced by my society was the decision to go to college. I was debating going into a trade or getting a job but everybody in my family went to college with made me pressured to go. Now that I am here I like it but I am going on my terms. I decided to live at home because I do not feel that I am ready to be on my own and feel it is smarter to save money. My parents originally wanted me to go away and get a full college experience but on my own I decided to stay and work at the same job I worked at in high school.
As I stated I believe that out social society plays a big role in who we become as people and it is our moral responsibility to help those who help us along the way. The people that raise us and provide for us sacrifice a lot in order to bring us up a certain way in a social environment so if they do u that for us the least we can do is look out for them.
Your points on the pressure to go to college and deciding on your own to commute were solid but I think you could have spent more time on exactly how big or small of a roll society has in shaping us in life. Also, you got your point across on your moral responsibility views but it was still a little brief.
ReplyDeleteI think to strengthen your argument about the pressure you felt by your family and society, it would have been helpful to reference communitarianism. Saying something like in American society education is heavily stressed opposed to other cultures that stress working or family over the furthering of intellectual development would have taken your argument to the next level. Communitarianists believe that the way we understand ourselves as a person is very different than someone one of a different culture or time, therefore the fact that you felt pressure to go to school is only due to the moral luck of your birth being where and when it was.
ReplyDeleteI agree that society puts a lot of pressure on young adults to attend college. You could have used percentages to talk about how much you believe our lives are determined by society. Should moral responsibility be limited to only family and friends, or anyone in general who has helped us along the way?
